Engines

The new C-Class should be extremely efficient, thanks to intelligent downsizing and economical engines. Only four-cylinder engines were installed, which come from the current modular Mercedes-Benz engine kit, and can therefore be used very flexibly and can also be electrified. There will be both diesel and gasoline engines, both of which have an integrated starter generator in addition to turbocharging. This acts as a mild hybrid at low speeds and ensures very good power delivery. A 48-volt electrical system is used for this, functions such as gliding, energy recovery, or a boost are possible.

The big innovation is that for the first time there is a diesel with an integrated starter generator, i.e. a diesel hybrid.

The 9G-Tronic transmission is used as the transmission in all versions of the C-Class, which has been further developed for the new model generation. The electric motor, the power electronics, and the transmission cooler are now attached in or on the transmission. This means that you no longer need cables, which means more space and less weight. Another advantage is that the efficiency of the transmission could be increased, which is due to the optimal interaction with the electrical auxiliary oil pump. The flow rate is reduced by 30 percent compared to a mechanical pump.

The 4Matic all-wheel-drive system has also been further developed. A new front-axle drive enables the transmission of higher torques with ideal axle load distribution. The significant weight advantage compared to the component of the predecessor models should not be neglected, which is also an important factor for reducing CO2.

New models without electrified versions are unthinkable, which is why plug-in hybrids will follow the classic models soon after the market launch. The purely electric range should be around 100 kilometers, which would be an unprecedented performance in this vehicle class. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder will have a system output of 313 hp and a maximum torque of 550 Nm and will not only be efficient but also sporty.

With a length of 4.75 meters and a width of 1.82 meters, the sedan and station wagon are significantly larger than their predecessors. The wheelbase has grown by 25 mm to 2.87 meters. Both the front and rear passengers benefit from the larger external dimensions.

If you look at the C-Class, it looks elegant and sporty, just as you would expect from a Mercedes. The short front overhang, the long wheelbase, and the rear overhang make the C-Class look very dynamic even when it is stationary. The bonnet with so-called power humps also makes it clear that you don’t have to do without sportiness. So that it can look like this, the windshield and the passenger cell have been moved further back. In technical jargon, one speaks of “Cab-Backward-Design”.

Further features for the sporty, confident appearance are the wide track and the 17- to 19-inch wheels in modern designs. The front grille is typical of the brand. All models have a central Mercedes star, with the design and character of the radiator grille differing in the details. The basic model has a central star and lamellae. The Avantgarde line features additional decorative elements in the slats, while the radiator grille and the front apron have chrome surrounds. The distinguishing feature of the AMG line is the diamond grille with the star design in chrome.

The rear is also typical of a Mercedes-Benz sedan. The high-quality design of the taillights is equipped with day and night optics. In the sedan, the lights are designed in two parts for the first time in the C-Class, with the light functions being distributed over the sidewall and trunk lid lights.

Three new finishes will be introduced along with the new model range: Spectral Blue, High Tech Silver, and Opalite White.

Mercedes C-Class 2022 Interior

While the previous model was a big step towards high quality in the interior, the new C-Class goes one step further in terms of modern luxury. The interior adopts highlights from the new S-Class and gives it a sporty touch.

The dashboard is divided into two parts, an upper and a lower area are now available. The wing-like area with the new ventilation openings, borrowed from aircraft engines, and an opulently designed decorative strip. The trim strip is not interrupted and goes from the center console directly to the dashboard.

The sportiness is also created by the strong driver orientation because the dashboard and central display are installed at a slight angle to the driver. In the driver’s area, there is also an LCD screen that is free-standing and appears to be floating.

The paradigm shift to digitization is also reflected in the central display: the vehicle functions can be controlled via the high-quality touchscreen. Its orientation in portrait format is particularly advantageous for navigation. The touchscreen also seems to float above the decorative strip. Like the dashboard, the screen is also tilted slightly towards the driver. The central display has a screen diagonal of 9.5 inches as standard, a larger version with 11.9 inches is optionally available.

The modern, greatly reduced design of the door panels frames the two ends of the dashboard. Based on the design of the center console, the front area takes the form of a metallic high-tech element. It can be used as a holding or closing handle and houses the control elements of the power windows. Another highlight is the floating control cluster, in which the control elements for the door opener and seat adjustment are integrated.

The special design of the optional avant-garde or sports seats in the new C-Class creates an optical impression of lightness with layers and enveloping surfaces. The headrests have been completely redesigned and attached to the backrest with a sealed panel, under which the adjustment mechanism is located.

For the C-Class, a leatherette-covered dashboard with belt lines in a Nappa look is available (optional equipment, standard with AMG-Line). The range of decorative elements is characterized by innovative surfaces. This includes newly interpreted open-pore veneers in shades of brown and a black, open-pore wood veneer with fine inlays made of real aluminum that follow the contours of the dashboard.

Like the new S-Class, the new C-Class is also equipped with the second generation of the MBUX infotainment system. The interior is becoming even more digital and intelligent because both the hardware and the software have made great advances: brilliant images on the LCD screens make it easy to control vehicles and comfort functions.

The look of the screens can be customized with three display styles (discreet, sporty, classic) and three modes (navigation, assistance, service).

A lot has also happened in terms of the trunk. The luggage compartment of the T-Model has grown by 30 liters and now has a volume of 490 to 1,510 liters. Other practical improvements are the enlargement of the load space under the retractable cover and a lower loading sill.

The rear seatback of the T-model can be folded down in a 40:20:40 split, all you have to do is press two push buttons on the top left and right of the rear seatback. Those who opt for the optional cargo space comfort package can have the seats folded down electrically.

The T-model has the EASY-PACK tailgate as standard. The tailgate opens and closes conveniently at the push of a button. Either with the button on the ignition key, the switch in the driver’s door, or the release handle on the tailgate.
